Smashing the Mental Health Stigma At Work
Smashing the Mental Health Stigma At Work
I originally posted this here on TheMighty which is an online community that has a mental health area of focus with a similar mission to mine.
Hi all,
My name is Aly and I have been suffering from severe but high functional depression and anxiety for nearly as long as I can remember. A lot of times this has major effects on my motivation, but I’ve finally committed to working on a project in support of those affected by mental illness in any way having increased success in the workplace.
I personally know that an astronomical amount of people would benefit from myself, and am going to share my own mental health stories in furtherance of my mission.
I have a huge project up ahead, so I am starting off by creating goals and action steps so that I can accomplish the best possible outcome. Some background: I am an attorney (and it was a struggle getting there with mental illness creating an astonishing amount of obstacles) and am currently training in coaching and counseling through volunteer work at a nonprofit that provides anonymous support for employees dealing with tough situations at work who do not feel comfortable reaching out to anyone at their place of work.
My first realistic action item is creating a blog where I will cover stories (both personal and articles I’ve researched) which will fully explain the need for more options, support, and the complete bulldozing of the stigma surrounding mental health. I look forward to sharing more with the community as I finally jump into this project.
